If you can’t imagine your life without culinary arts, you must’ve come across the James Beard Foundation (JBF). Established four decades ago, the foundation hosts awards, publishes industry reports, and fosters the culinary community through advocacy and events.
The James Beard Foundation’s scholarship program has been around since 1991. The program has helped 2,000+ food lovers study culinary and pastry arts, acquire restaurant management skills, and conduct food research. To date, the foundation distributed almost $10 million in scholarships, tuition waivers, and work-study grants.
In 2024, however, the organization announced that James Beard Foundation national scholarships will now be handled by Careers through Culinary Arts Program (C-CAP). Here’s what this change means, which scholarships you can apply for, and how to do it.
James Beard Foundation Scholarships: Your Crash Course
Over the past two decades, the JBF scholarships have become the go-to financial aid program for anyone interested in acquiring or honing skills for their culinary career.
That said, the program never focused exclusively on culinary arts. Awardees could also use that aid to study pastry arts or restaurant management, conduct food research, and more. What’s more, the program was designed for both working professionals and aspiring culinary workers.
The legacy program, the one run by the JBF itself until 2024, awarded three types of aid:
- Scholarships (i.e., cash grants for tuition and sometimes other expenses)
- Tuition waivers (both renewable and non-renewable)
- Work-study grants for working professionals
If you come across this JBF scholarships page, be careful: it’s the archived application portal. You can’t apply through it in 2026; you have to go through C-CAP.
Yes, C-CAP Now Runs James Beard Foundation Scholarships
In case you’ve never heard of C-CAP, it’s a not-for-profit organization that focuses on culinary training. It’s not a cooking school itself; rather, it facilitates connections between high schools and students on the one hand and culinary programs on the other.
Founded in 1990, C-CAP serves communities in six U.S. cities, as well as Arizona and Washington, D.C. It also has an impressive track record, having uplifted almost 400,000 students and distributed $79 million in college scholarships.
As per the 2024 announcement, C-CAP took over four scholarship opportunities previously run by the JBF:
- Jean-Louis Palladin work-study grant
- James Beard Foundation General C-CAP Scholarships
- JBF Bern Laxer Memorial Scholarship at C-CAP
- JBF & C-CAP Andrew Zimmern Second Chances Scholarship
4 James Beard Foundation Scholarships You Can Apply For
As of writing, C-CAP hasn’t published its list of scholarship opportunities for the 2026–2027 academic year. So, we went ahead and reviewed the previous year’s list to give you an idea of which scholarships could be in store for you.
James Beard Foundation General C-CAP Scholarships
These are the cash scholarships that are available to all applicants nationwide. Apart from that, C-CAP doesn’t say much more about these scholarships on its website. It only tells you they exist.
So, we did some digging and found this 2024–2025 guide to JBF scholarships. It states that the JBF National Scholars Scholarship amounted to $20,000, with one scholarship awarded for each of the 12 U.S. regions listed. Applications required two letters of recommendation from employers or instructors and a 300-word essay about academic and career goals.
Bern Laxer Memorial James Beard Foundation Scholarship
Are you a Florida resident? If so, you’re in luck: C-CAP and JBF have a scholarship just for you. The Bern Laxer Memorial Scholarship can finance your tuition if you’re planning to major in culinary studies, hospitality management, or viticulture/oenology.
In 2025, the organization planned to award up to 3 scholarships of $15,000 each. In 2026, C-CAP states that the program offers “up to $25,000.”
Be careful: the scholarship requires at least a year of culinary experience. It doesn’t mean you have to have been an employee, however; student experience also makes you eligible.
Jean-Louis Palladin James Beard Foundation Grant
If you’re a working chef, this grant is for you. The Jean-Louis Palladin James Beard Foundation Grant offers you up to $4,000 to fund your work-study trip. Named in honor of Chef Jean-Louis Palladin, the initiative offered two annual grants in 2024–2025.
Since it’s a grant for a work-study program, the application is somewhat different from your typical college scholarship one. You have to provide a detailed work-study plan with a budget, as well as a cover letter and two professional references.
Be warned: the program doesn’t send the grant upfront. Instead, it reimburses awardees after they submit expense forms and final narrative reports once the work-study program is over.
A Word on Andrew Zimmern’s Second Chances Scholarship
Even though the initial 2024 press release listed this scholarship as now administered by C-CAP, we couldn’t find any mention of it on the organization’s website. However, we did find out that the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) accepted applications for two Andrew Zimmern's Second Chances Scholarships of $5,000 in early 2026.
According to the CIA listing, this scholarship is destined for incoming undergraduate students experiencing hardships in their pursuit of a culinary degree. Any undergraduate program qualifies, but you have to clear the 2.5 minimum GPA threshold and have a confirmed financial need as per FAFSA.
How Much You Can Get with James Beard Foundation Scholarships
As you can see by now, the award varies depending on the scholarship or grant you apply for and your need, too. The national scholarships could total $20,000, while the Palladin work-study grant would reimburse your expenses, as long as they don’t exceed $4,000.
The up-to-date amounts are usually listed right in the application form. So, before you pour time and effort into writing that essay or gathering letters of recommendation, check it out. Pay attention to the phrasing, too. Is there an “up to” before the stated amount? Or is it presented as a hard number?
How You Can Use the Awarded Funds
Likewise, what you can use the funds for depends on the scholarship itself. The JBF General C-CAP Scholarships will cover your tuition fees. The same goes for the Bern Laxer Memorial Scholarship. In some cases, you can use a portion of the funds for school-related expenses (e.g., room and board costs).
In contrast, the Palladin Grant applies to costs directly related to your work-study program. Those can include travel and accommodation costs, for example.

- Head to C-CAP’s website. C-CAP is now your number one source for up-to-date information on JBF scholarships. So, visit its resource hub to check out available scholarships, eligibility criteria, and deadlines.
- Pick the right scholarship. Some scholarships are reserved for residents of certain states. Others are available nationwide but may require culinary experience. So, consider eligibility criteria before choosing and make sure the scholarship fits in with your academic and professional goals, too.
- Double-check eligibility criteria. Just because one scholarship is open to aspiring culinary pros doesn’t mean the other one will be. So, make sure your profile matches each scholarship’s prerequisites.
- Find and follow up-to-date instructions. Let’s be real for a moment: for now, the application process is unclear. So, we’d advise you to keep an eye on the website until the new application form goes online. Once it does, fill it out and submit all the required documents. Steer clear of legacy forms!
How Competitive Do C-CAP Scholarships Get?
As per C-CAP’s 2025 impact report, the organization supports 25,000+ students every year. Of course, that figure includes everyone who participated in its educational programs and events. When it comes to scholarships, C-CAP awarded them to 150 winners in 2024–2025. (This figure includes both JBF scholarship recipients and other awardees.)
Considering that each initiative offers one or two scholarships per cycle (and per region for national scholarships), we’d wager a guess that competition gets quite intense. However, we can’t confirm it without official stats.
5 Expert Tips for Acing That Scholarship Application
Whichever scholarship or grant you decide to apply for, your success will hinge on how well you show the selection committee you’re the perfect fit for it. So, to that end:
- Be clear about your aspirations. Don’t start with, “I’ve always wanted to be a chef.” Open your essay with an anecdote that shows your passion and close with where you see yourself in several years. Paint a vivid picture; focus on the impact you want to make.
- Connect your goals to the scholarship. How will this scholarship help you achieve your goals? Provide a clear answer in your essay. But be careful: it shouldn’t turn into a tear-jerker, either.
- Cite clear examples. Instead of, “I like cooking for those without shelter,” go for, “I’ve been volunteering at an XYZ soup kitchen for two years now, and it brings me joy.”
- Get supporting documents early. Check out the list of required documents and get those letters of recommendation or transcripts ASAP.
- Always double-check before submitting. Make sure every comma is in its right place, every required document is attached, and no typos have sneaked into your answers.
